The Ceddesfolk musicians love a good tune - from here, there and pretty much anywhere, though mainly these tradition-rich British Isles. Our baseline is dance music - jigs, reels, hornpipes, waltzes but we have some beautiful, moody slow airs in our repertoire. We meet once a month, on the 3rd Wednesday evening, to play squeezeboxes, fiddle, whistles and any other instrument really, but always acoustic.
CHEMIC TAVERN (7.30pm) The Chemic Tavern, 9 Johnston Street, Leeds LS6 2NG *OPEN MIC* 🐶📨 chemictavern97@gmail.com
Every Thursday
Free drink for all performers
Come down from 8pm every Thursday to enjoy the splendour of the Chemic's dedicated live music room - no bar noise, no TVs, no one-armed bandits, just a great sound and light system, a lovingly restored pre-WWI piano, and a respectful and attentive crowd of fellow musicians and music aficionados.
Can't bring your own instrument? As well as the aforementioned piano, I'll also be making my guitar available to those who wish to play it. And as an added incentive, all performers will receive a token for a free drink! All styles and all levels of ability welcome. And if you're not a musician, don't let that put you off - we're just as happy to host poets, comedians, you name it.
We always try to accommodate our performers' needs and put them on at the rough time they want to play. Perhaps you need to be done by a certain time to catch the last bus home, or maybe you're like me and prefer to go on a bit later after you've had a few drinks; we'll do what we can to put you onstage at a time that suits you.

This is the kind of thing people put before they disappear, but we are alive and well and to be honest – we’re thriving.
We tend to have “fallow” years in which we play 4 or 5 gigs and then busy years where we do over a dozen. 2023 was a very quiet year. I think we played in public 5 times (Summer fetes, wedding, etc) .
What I don’t do is update this particular page. I update the Music page all the time. We have a very active and private Facebook group for people who actually play in the group.
We still meet every week on odd Wednesdays and Mondays – just to confuse.
Check the calendar to find out when we play and contact me for more details.

The Friendly Folk Club...
Raising the Rafters is a club that runs on one thing - generosity - and over the years we've built up a large band of supporters who all agree that Raising the Rafters is a friendly folk club and it doesn’t matter whether you want to bring an instrument and join in or just come and soak up the atmosphere and the music....you’ll be very welcome. The door prices are kept deliberately low at a flat rate of £5 per person and as there are no rip-off bar prices to pay, a Raising the Rafters evening is a good value night out! Young people 16 and under - admission free.
And It’s All For Charity........!
Everything we raise goes to charity! We have raised over TWENTY THOUSAND POUNDS for good causes since we started! Generally we leave it to the guest to choose which charity to support and we are the means of turning their musical talent into money for their chosen charity. Sometimes we ask our supporters. It's a unique model of a folk club..... got a charity you'd like us to support? Email Hugo and tell him!
RAISING THE RAFTERS FOLK CLUB (7.30pm £5) The Saint James Rooms, Church Street, Wath-upon-Dearne S63 7RD *SINGERS & MUSICIANS NIGHT* ☎️ 07522 576855 📨 hugo@raisingtherafters.co.uk
2nd Saturday
The clue’s in the name...
'Raising the Rafters Folk Club' started in May 2013 to raise money for the Wath-upon-Dearne Parish Church roof appeal (hence the name!) – and it’s all gone on from there! We raised nearly £2000 to help rescue one of the finest Tudor roofs in England and have gone on to become what we believe is a unique Folk Club! - a Folk Club which exists to raise money for local and national charities. Our motto? - Everything we take, we donate!
Every second Saturday of the month. Starts at 8.00 p.m. in the Saint James Rooms, Church Street, Wath-upon-Dearne, S63 7RD, in the centre of Wath (doors open at 7.30 p.m.), next to Wath All Saints Parish Church.
There’s free parking next door at the Montgomery Hall Car Park and further down Church Street at the Saracens Head Car Park and a 24hr Tesco across the road, which is handy as the Saint James Rooms are not licensed. Don’t worry, it’s not a “dry” folk club (there’s no such thing!). All visitors are encouraged to bring their own wine, beer and spirits and we provide the glasses. (we even do the washing up!)

Every Tuesday
SALE FOLK CLUB is open EVERY TUESDAY EVENING at 8.00pm for an ACOUSTIC FOLK NIGHT.
We encourage the sharing of all music, song, verse and humour performed acoustically or with absolute minimum amplification and the evenings are held in the round to achieve the maximum interaction, or craic if you are Irish, between the listeners and the performers. Everyone gets an equal opportunity to give a solo performance being supported only in choruses or when they invite the others to join in. This may be changed slightly only if some world famous celebrity walks in when we may spoil them a little but this only happens occasionally. During the evening the hosts endeavour to coordinate the performers' contributions into a fluent and coherent whole to maximise the entertainment value for both the listeners and the performers.
In practice we have modern and traditional Folk Songs from England, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, America. Rhythm & Blues features as does Country and Western and many people perform their own excellent material. The mixture is very eclectic with the likes of Dylan, Guthrie, The Beatles, Fats Waller, Jez Lowe, Allan Taylor, Richard Thompson, Jake Thackray and many more being represented.

Last Friday
A fun evening of singing, playing, drinking, listening and craic.
Come along on the LAST FRIDAY of the month and allow yourselves to chill and let the stresses and strains of everyday life pass you by.
We never know who is going to turn up, but rest assured there will be at least a handful of regulars to keep the tunes ticking along and quite often the odd visitor to the area who seek out events like this wherever they go, and spread the hand of companionship throughout the land. Come and take part with whatever you have to offer. Your competence doesn't matter . . . just your passion for performing, singing or playing. It's a great chance to 'cut your teeth' as a performer if you are inexperienced, or just to release your pent up inner feelings that may be bursting to get out. The TAOMN audience is an appreciative audience to all who are prepared to get up do their thing, whatever it may be.
So . . . last Friday of each month . . . or not at all. It never changes. We hope to see you there.
Performances from 8.30pm to 11.30pm. Bar from 2pm until 12 midnight.

1st, 3rd & 5th Wednesday
On the 17th April 1990 the Australian landlord and Yorkshire landlady of Ye Olde Cross Inn in Ryton met with Ronnie and Margaret Palmer, Dave Minikin and Ed Lawrence to discuss the possibility of starting a folk club in the pub. Following this inaugural meeting the first night of folk music was on Thursday 3rd May 1990.
We congregated in the bar amongst the regulars of the pub, and we attracted twelve folkies. There were 7 singers, 2 guitar players, an accordion player and a whistle player.
The folk music continued every Thursday night, with both singers and musicians attending regularly, and on one of these nights Danny McLeod and Alan Fitzsimmons came along. They both have become influential figures on the folk scene, and were instrumental in developing the club.
